Cosmetic surgery is more popular than it has ever been before and thanks to lower prices and better practices, this is something which is more accessible than it has ever been. As a result of this last year I decided to give myself a little birthday treat and invested in one of the face lifts that I had been hearing so much about, to give me a more youthful look. The surgery was a great success and I would highly recommend a rhytidectomy to anyone who wants a younger, fresher appearance. If this is something which you have considered but you are not sure about, here is what you need to know.

What Is It?

This is an outpatient procedure which will see you go under the knife to lift skin away from the lower part of the face and neck. The surgeon will make an incision behind the ear and in front of the ear, to lift away skin from the facial muscles. The idea of a face lift is to give you a more youthful look by tightening up the face and re-shaping it to your bone-structure.

Pre-Op

Before the operation your surgeon will discuss any existing medical conditions which you may have and ask questions about your general health. During these consultations they will also tell you what your best results could be, and you will reach an agreement about what you are both expecting from this surgery.

The Surgery

During the surgery you will be placed under general anesthetic and the surgery itself will take between 2 and 5 hours, depending on how much work there is to do. After the surgery you will need a short amount of time to recover and almost all patients will go home the same day after their surgery.

What Can I Expect?

A face lift can help you to remove sagging skin, reduce the droop of cheeks around the jaw line, lift up the corners of the  mouth and it can also look to reduce any creases between the lips and cheek. Your surgeon will speak to you before the operation to ensure that you know what the end-game is.

Will It Last?

Face lifts do not last forever and in 21% of cases the face will relapse, in 76% of cases people will see the surgery wear off after around 6 years. Even for those who’s face has relapsed however, they will look younger than they did prior to having the surgery.

Recovery

The first week after the face lift will be uncomfortable as your face reacts to the new shape, during this time it is advised that you rest and don’t engage in physical activity. After the first week you should feel back to normal and the scars should be gradually beginning too disappear.

How Much Does It Cost?

In 2017 the average cost of a facelift was $7,643 .
